The Must-Read Book Club

Anna Guest-Jelley: I found this book when I was desperate. I’d been hating my body—and often myself—for decades, and I was just so exhausted by it. I didn’t know where to turn, and, during some inspiration-searching, I found this book. Or, as I like to think of it, it found me.

YCNYC: Favorite quote?

AG-J: “The boundary to what we can accept is the boundary to our freedom.” Even reading this now, I feel a deep exhale and knowing in my body. When I came to the work of body acceptance, I knew it had so much to do with freedom. I love how Tara highlights this here. For me, it’s such an invitation into more acceptance because, of course, I also want more freedom to be who I am.

YCNYC: What one person would you recommend this book to?

AG-J: If you keep fighting yourself continually over the same issues—who doesn’t?—this book is for you. It not only provides inspiration, but a way forward.

YCNYC: What moment or part resonates with you the most?

AG-J: I love the core concept of radical acceptance, where radical exists in its true meaning of getting to the root. What if we could accept ourselves at our core? What if acceptance is the foundation of everything we want in life, including how we can support and serve others? These are the questions I never tire of exploring.
