Locavore Presents Holiday Hot Chocolate

As the holidays roll around, I am brought back into the spirit of giving. Unfortunately, as a college student, I have little money to spend on my friends. My pals and I decided to only spend a maximum of $10 on each other’s gifts. I remembered that sometimes the best present is something homemade.

After much consideration, I chose to make the hot chocolate mix that my family always made this time of year. It’s seasonal, festive, and simple, and all the ingredients cost under $10.

Ingredients:

-1 box Carnation Instant Milk (powder)

-1 (6 oz) jar Coffee-mate

-1 box of powder sugar

-1 (2lb) box Nisquick

-3 tsp. of cinnamon

Here's how to make it:

Combine all the ingredients in a large bowl, and store.

This makes a lot of hot chocolate mix, but that’s the beauty of it—you can give it to a lot of friends. You can spend a little extra money on metal holiday tins to up the gift ante, or you can keep it simple by placing it in a Ziploc bag. All that needs to be done is adding the mix in some hot water.
