The Must-Read Book Club
Elissa Weinzimmer: I knew Liz Gilbert was coming out with a new book this past fall. I really loved Eat, Pray, Love, so this new book was definitely on my radar and list of things to read. However, when a friend highly (highly!) recommended it to me, I told him that I was busy reading other things and wouldn't get to it right away. Fast forward a few weeks later, and I sat down to watch the interview that Marie Forleo did with Liz Gilbert. I was floored. It was so inspiring and so galvanizing. I bought the book right away and devoured the whole thing within the week. Not only that, I started buying copies for all of my friends as holiday presents. To date, I have purchased ten copies of this book.
YCNYC: Favorite quote?
EW: I"...You have treasures hidden within you - extraordinary treasures - and so do I, and so does everyone around us. And bringing those treasures to light takes work and faith and focus and courage and hours of devotion, and the clock is ticking, and the world is spinning, and we simply do not have time anymore to think so small."
YCNYC: What one person would you recommend this book to?
EW: Any aspiring artist or entrepreneur. Especially the 9 friends I bought it for!
YCNC: What moment or part resonates with you the most?
EW: On page 259 Liz says, "There is a famous question that shows up, it seems, in every single self-help book ever written: What would you do if you knew that you could not fail?
But I've always seen it differently. I think the fiercest question of all is this one: What would you do even if you knew that you might very well fail?
What do you love doing so much that the words failure and success essentially become irrelevant?
What do you love even more than you love your own ego? How fierce is your trust in that love?"
Powerful, right?! Plus, Liz has this metaphor about a shit sandwich, and it's brilliant. I'll let you read the book rather than explain it. But suffice it to say, my copy of the book is scrawled all over with "Yes Liz!!" in the margins. I truly love this book.
