Within spiritual communities there have always been individuals in positions of authority who’ve abused their power. The natural urge in the face of this kind of sexual abuse is to look away, ignore the evidence, and pretend it didn’t happen.
Often, communities scapegoat the abused. Ironically, these are usually the people who came to a sangha looking for a place to gain strength and safely explore their spirituality. Unfortunately, their vulnerability makes them more likely targets for those inclined to abuse their position of power.
How is a studio owner expected to deal with this problem? What is the responsibility of the other teachers and students? Right now, headline-making lawsuits are the only viable option for the abused, which can then turn into counter suits and become very expensive.
This Deeper Learning event is held in conjunction with Yoga For New York in light of the scandals that have accumulated in our own community. We will be joined by Alison West, Anneke Lucas, Beth Dobrish, LCSW, Eddie Stern, Julie Dohrman, and Tamar Samir to begin to look more deeply into this issue.
Our panelists will be asked how this abuse has continued in our community, which abides by the yamas and niyamas that forbid this behavior. How it has affected all of us, particularly those who have spoken up, and, most importantly; what we can do to bring it to an end.
After a formal discussion, questions from the audience are encouraged.
