The Must-Read Book Club

Emily Kauffman: I found this book while browsing through a book store one day. The words on the first few pages spoke to me and it was like nothing that I had read before. This was the first book about the philosophical notion of being present and it initially sparked my interest in this principle.

YCNYC: Favorite quote?

EK: "We seem to be like flies caught in honey. Because life is sweet we do not want to give it up, and yet the more we become involved in it, the more we are trapped, limited, and frustrated. We love it and hate it at the same time. We fall in love with people and possessions only to be tortured by anxiety for them."

YCNYC: What one person would you recommend this book to?

EK: Anyone who is constantly searching and struggling to find peace each day through the external world.

YCNC: What moment or part resonates with you the most?

EK: The light bulb went off for me when Alan Watts drove home the point of not necessarily making our lives about having security and comfort, but being able to tolerate insecurity and make peace with the constant impermanence of life.
